East­ern Guru or Woke ‘Rev­erend’? The Dif­fer­ence is Unclear

“Exalt­ed be the Divine ‘LGBT,’ the Holy ‘Becom­ing Ones’ ” ‑1 Queer The­ol­o­gy 1:1

In a post that sound more East­ern mys­ti­cism than Chris­t­ian, self-pro­claimed “Rev­erend” and author, Jacqui Lewis took to Twit­ter this evening to let Chris­tians know that trans­gen­der peo­ple are in touch with the divine:

Her post opens with an affir­ma­tion of “Queer the­ol­o­gy,” so we already know Dr. Lewis has depart­ed from bib­li­cal Chris­tian­i­ty. She has instead cre­at­ed an idol out of per­verse sex­u­al­i­ty. Lewis then exhorts her audi­ence to lis­ten to “queer sib­lings” by pre­sup­pos­ing that queer peo­ple some­how have a unique access to the­o­log­i­cal knowl­edge that oth­ers do not have.

The tor­tured sec­ond sen­tence ends with Lewis assert­ing that queers have the abil­i­ty to “become who they already are” by lis­ten­ing to “the divine voice.” One may won­der how some­one can become what they already are, or how a divine voice that pro­motes sex­u­al immoral­i­ty could have any­thing to do with Chris­tian­i­ty. Answers to these ques­tions are found want­i­ng in such inco­her­ent ram­blings.

But the bizarre rant does not stop there. In a short video dis­played under this tweet, Dr. Lewis fur­ther pon­tif­i­cates on the majesty of queer iden­ti­ty:

…trans friends, when they are becom­ing who they already are. They are becom­ing who they already are. Oh my G‑d. What a beau­ti­ful thought that is. Some­thing for us to learn from. To become who you already are. The imprint of the holy already on you. The bless­ing of God’s love already on you… Becom­ing who we already are.

Dr. Lewis seems quite obsessed with the unin­tel­li­gi­ble post­mod­ern idea of “becom­ing who you already are.” Behind the emp­ty plat­i­tudes, how­ev­er, it is clear that Lewis not only believes that queer iden­ti­ty is not a sin­ful pro­cliv­i­ty to repent of, but a pos­i­tive iden­ti­ty to be cel­e­brat­ed and exalt­ed. We, how­ev­er, pre­fer the God-inspired words of the apos­tle Paul, who writes about homo­sex­u­als.

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanc­ti­fied, you were jus­ti­fied in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spir­it of our God.
