Andy Stanley Responds To Criticism on His Support for Homosexuality

We covered Al Mohler’s hypocritical condemnation of Andy Stanley on homosexuality. Now Andy Stanley has begun his damage control, starting with preaching a “sermon” (which was not streamed) as phase one of his response to criticism. The sermon, which so far has been released by Protestia, though there are rumors that North Point will release the sermon, was a mess of rationalization, self justification, and manipulation. In isolation it may not be too bad, but the conference (see our article on Mohler’s article) was bad. When you invite “LGBT activists,” some of whom are men “married” to other men, it’s hard to claim you do not have an unbiblical view of homosexuality.
This is amplified by Andy’s “sermon,” where the Bible was not touched, but many claims were made about “gay people praying for God to change them, and He didn’t answer.” Andy makes it clear that people need to be loved where they’re at, and attempts should not be made to change them, despite Andy claiming that “Biblical marriage is between a man and a woman.” By Andy’s own logic, he is encouraging leaving people to suffer under the bondage of sin, and that God is unable or unwilling to free people from their sin.
Let’s be clear, God is both able and willing to free people from sin, in fact He died on a cross to prove that. There is a way out. Ask anyone who has faced a temptation, alcoholism, pornography, gambling, if overcoming it was instantaneous, or if it required a heart-soul-mind-strength commitment to God, His word, accountability to other believers, prayer, study, etc. The truth is, if these “gay” people that Andy say God “didn’t answer their prayers” are Christians, then He did answer their prayers. He gave them the Holy Spirit and His church, and you’ll never find anything more powerful and support for overcoming sin than that. The clear truth is, Andy is still pushing an unbiblical view of homosexuality, even as he tries to play damage control.
6Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

Even though Charles Stanley was very very old, he probably actually died of embarrassment over Andy’s apostasy.
